According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, the Cubs have signed lefty reliever Xavier Cedeno to a non-guaranteed deal that could pay him $900,000.
Cedeno, 32, split the 2018 season with the White Sox and Brewers and was very effective. He posted a 2.43 ERA in 48 games and 33.1 innings. He struck out 34 while walking 16 and allowing 26 hits. He held left handed hitters to a .207/.281/.293 line in 64 plate appearances.
Advanced stats aren't the biggest fan of Cedeno as he had a 3.50 xFIP and a very low HR/FB of 5.3 %. Although he definitely not a hard thrower (his fastball averages just 86.8 MPH), his fastball and curveball spin rates both ranked towards the top of the MLB.
If Cedeno makes the team he will likely serve as the replacement to Justin Wilson, who signed with the Mets. He has held lefties to a a .593 OPS throughout his career along with a solid 3.81 K/BB and just 5 home runs allowed.
